
Charlestown Nevis, August 9th 2001. Nevisians and visitors alike were treated to a show of comedy, song and drama as the Talented Youth and the Junior Kaiso contestants took to the stage at the Cultural Complex on the evening of August 2nd, 2001.
Phillichar Hobson and Shonroy Caesar (St.Thomas’ Primary School) emerged the winners of the evening as they dazzled the crowd and the judges on their way to victory, out of a filed of twelve contestants. Trishina Joshua and Quinnito Griffin (Gingerland Primary School) received first runner up while Mickia Mills and Denrick Hanley (Combermere Primary School) earned the second runner up position. Other participants were Jahnel Esdaille and Torran Slack (St.John’s Primary School), Malinda Bailey and Jadel Browne (St.James Primary School) and Valencia Robins and Kejel Tyson (Prospect Primary School).
The rich and vibrant culture native to Nevis was the focus of the show as the children portrayed local figures in history, Lord Nelson and Fanny Nisbett among them. Flamboyant costumes held the audience in awe as each school shone at its brightest. Drama was alive and well as the talent segment took off. At times the appreciative was crowd rolling in their seats at the witty remarks of the participants.
The show was interspersed with the Junior Kaiso Contest, which featured Latifah, Penny, Tukid, Sister Amina and Lebo. The kaisonians entertained their crowd with their savvy tunes and creative costumes. Latifah won the crown in this her final year of junior competition, a more than fitting exit to her seven year long career with the contest. Her song ‘Ain gone yet’ was a testament to her experience during the time she spent with the show.
