"MAS! FOLKLORE! FUN! FOR CULTURAMA 2001!"
July 27th - August 7th

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis (August 8, 2001) Thousands milled about as seven calypsonians came up against the reigning King Dis N Dat in the battle of the giants for the finals of the Kaiso Contest 2001 sponsored by O D Brisbane, on Sunday August 4, 2001.

Calypsonians battled one after the other, as a colourful presentation of lyrics, music and performances kept the judges on their feet. The competition was tough as the standard was tremendously high, and the calypsonians in their philosophical mood rendered songs of Patriotism, Social Commentary and Political Partisan amidst great support, encouragement and appreciation from the participative audience.

Round one was a true test of lyrical soundness and performance. However, as the public generated much speculation, Crefton Warner known in the calypso arena as King Meeko captured the crowds’ attention. His two songs, "Guilty" and "Wave your rag" and his usual magical performance ensured him of the crown when the smoke had cleared. He last won the crown in 1999 but opted not to compete last year.

His runners up were the King Dis N Dat who sang "The pipeline bust" and "Tribute to our fallen heroes;" and veteran Mighty Flamingo with "Where do we go from here" and "Respect our elders." Other finalists were new comer to the senior ring, King Hollywood, a Junior Calypso King for three years and Black Hat after ten years of absence. Puppa Wheeler, Astro and Knolly Banton were also among the finalists.

Trinidadian Comedian Errol Fabian and Vincentian "Saluish" hosted the evenings’ event with guest appearances from the Mighty Sabu and Trinidadian Calypsonians Pink Panther, Joel and Cyclops.

The audience was graced with the presence of Premier Vance Amory and wife of the Minister of Culture Mrs Yvonne Guishard. Mrs Guishard crowned the King and presented trophies to the other winners. Amory commented during an interview that the show was very good in terms of the quality and standard the Calypsonians put forward.
